Joined Oct 5, 2008. 2,696 Posts. #2 · Mar 16, 2009. i don't think this will be simple. if it spins freely, the problem is inside the engine. these starters don't have a solenoid to engage them into the flywheel teeth. they are in constant mesh with a gear inside the engine. if yours is just spinning, it's going to need to have the engine torn. Problem is starter motor isn't cranking engine. The starter pinion spins but is not rising to engage the flywheel. I have already done the following: 1. Checked battery. 2. Replaced starter relay with a new one even though old relay output was a good 12V. Made no difference. 3.
